Summer Road Trip Dreams

This summer we will embark on a month-long, cross-country Vanagon road trip.  We're in the earliest planning stages right now, but a few things seem certain:

  1. It will be awesome.  A four-week vacation to hang out all over the country?  It's a no-brainer.
  2. We will take a northern route west from Boston to the far reaches of Washington state, and hopefully--time permitting--explore Vancouver-area British Columbia.
  3. We'll head south along the coast to San Francisco, where our trip will turn to the east. We've never been through wine country. If I enjoy the wine tastings as much as I imagine, the Vanagon may spend the night parked at a vineyard or two.
That's about all we've decided thus far.  Travelling west, we'll be joined by some adventurous friends in Chicago, who will accompany us through the wilds of the Badlands, Tetons and as far as they can tolerate the confines of the van...and Parker.
Parker, first hearing about the trip...

  1. 4 weeks for that trip... ambitious. lol. Sheri and I are doing a trip in our Syncro around the US, from New Brunswick Canada to Florida, to California, to WA/BC... and back to PEI, Canada. We started in December and are only in New Mexico... and that has felt rushed... lots of 'drive time'... Don't be discouraged if you don't get to all your destinations in the time you've set out. Enjoy the trip.

  2. Thanks for the reality check, Robby! It's true that 4 weeks is very little time to leisurely travel across the country and back. We plan to really enjoy the journey west to the pacific NW (probably omitting BC), and if we have to hustle back east, so be it. We don't plan to have every stop and activity mapped out. That's part of the adventure! I'd love to hear more about your own trip.

  3. While in the pacific northwest, check the WetWesties.org calendar and see if you can catchup during a WW campout with a bunch of other Westy drivers. :)
